AUGUSTA, GA - In the battle against urban blight, downtown merchants can enjoy the distinction of being the “tip of the spear.” This quick reaction force of small businessmen and women, armed with cash registers and sidewalk signs, is the thin green line that keeps Augusta’s city center from falling into the jaws of a third-world-like wasteland. How to repay them, you ask?
Loyalty!
Look for a downtown loyalty card to appear sometime this year, courtesy of the Downtown Augusta Alliance, d(a)2 for you urbane types. The plan would be modeled on a similar program in Atlanta, with a card that entitles patrons to a discount.
Also on the way, a convenient map of all downtown establishments and new events that should draw consumers away from the malls and other suburban shopping spots.
Details are still in the works. The d(a)2 executive session met last week and voted unanimously to keep current board through 2008 to “keep momentum going.”
They board includes Lara Plocha, president, of Blue Magnolia; Emily Carder, vice president, of GlueStick Management and Promotions; Trey Kennedy, treasurer, of Georgia Bank and Trust; and Chris Allewelt, secretary, of New Moon Cafe.
