| AUGUSTA, GA. - Downtown got a little more festive this last weekend when 29 businesses decorated their window fronts for the first annual Downtown Augusta Alliance (da²) Downtown Window Decorating Contest. The contest was held in coordination with the Downtown Development Authority’s Christmas Light Up Spectacular.
“It was a blast doing this,” said Laura Plocha, contest organizer and da² director. “We are thrilled with the participation we got this year. We only hoped for about 15 businesses, but we nearly doubled that number.”
A panel of three judges chose category winners based on creativity and ingenuity. “They based it mostly on whether that business creating a design that went along with their theme,” she said. Best of Show went to Art on Broad, and won the business a $1,000 advertising package with The Augusta Chronicle. Vintage 965 won for Traditional Holiday Spirit, 1102 Downtown Bar and Grill won for Most Whimsical and Blue Magnolia won for Most Original Use of Lights. Two buildings, The Augusta Chronicle and the Lamar Building, also won in corporate categories.
But perhaps the votes that counted most were the 293 First Friday patrons who gave the White Elephant Cafe the People’s Choice Award.
“The turnout was excellent when you consider this was our first year and we only had voting for one night,” she said. “Though I think the coolest part of it is having the bragging rights for the next year.”
Plocha added that each winning business can display the award until next year’s contest and next year’s goal is to have every business participate.
