AUGUSTA, GA - Those in search of adventure, intrigue, science, and the magic of history could not hope to do better than Jo Marchant’s account of ancient technology entitled “Decoding the Heavens:  A 2000-Year-Old Computer – and the Century-Long Search to Discover its Secrets.”

A science journalist and author of a feature article in Nature concerning the Antikythera Mechanism, Jo Marchant offers a talented pen and a nose for intrigue in her recounting of the marvelous device that has inspired a tremendous amount of curiosity in the last 100 years or so. Written in a delicate pen reminiscent of the best newspaper stories from years gone by, this work showcases the artistic elements possible in well-crafted journalism.

Let me begin by stating that this is a true story. For those like myself who are unfamiliar with the device, it may seem like fantasy in just a moment. This story revolves around the “Antikythera Mechanism,” which is said to be the world’s first analog computer. Discovered over 100 years ago and constructed over 2000 years ago, this device has baffled scientists and scholars since its discovery.

Marchant takes us along as scientists clash over details and conflict over egos while attempting to discern the secrets of this device. Discovered among the remains of an ancient Greek shipwreck, this device offers elements of intrigue, destiny, conflict, power, curiosity and scientific exploration all under one shiny cover. With this information, Marchant is able to explore modern technology by seeking out its roots in the ancient world.

Built on a fantastic level of craftswomanship, this work really allows us to decode the heavens by offering a spirited glimpse of how the world of today can so often be shaped by the ideas and manifestations of the past.
