AUGUSTA, GA. - If there’s a single musician to which all Augustans can relate — besides James Brown, that is — it’s Rykodisc recording artist Will Hoge. The Nashville, Tenn., singer-songwriter plays straightforward rock ‘n’ roll with a Southern twist.
Blues, country, gospel and Motown all infiltrate his sound, but what makes him really stand out are his high-energy live performances. His grassroots style and support of loyal fans keeps him on the road almost constantly.
His raw sound and free spirit suit his indie chops, but he’s not just some guy touring small clubs in the region, hoping to get noticed. And Atlanta Records picked him up, releasing “Blackbird on a Lonely Wire.”
But tired of the corporate style, he asked for release from his contract. He’s since released a number of live and studio albums. His most recent, “Draw the Curtains,” was released in October. A limited-edition vinyl record released last month.
Hoge has toured with ZZ Top and Edwin McCain, but may still be best known for performing the opening theme to the CBS sitcom “Still Standing.” Hey, everyone starts somewhere. And a major network isn’t a bad place for it.
Will Hoge Thursday, Dec. 20 Le Chat Noir 8 p.m. $15 in advance, $20 at the door 706-722-3322 lcnaugusta.com willhoge.com
