Band Aide 1 continues to rock Coyotes with a second set of five local bands, all competing for a pretty sweet prize package

BY DINO LULL

AUGUSTA, GA – Supporting local bands: This is what Band Aide 1 is all about. Simply put, Band Aide 1 will showcase over five weeks several of the area’s finest bands through a series of concerts.

This Thursday, Oct. 29, fans of some of Augusta’s best local music will be treated to performances by False Flag, My Instant Lunch, Eleventhour, Turf War and Great Day in the Morning.

Hosted by the Metro Spirit and Rock Bottom Music, music groups from all around the area entered for a chance to play the show, but only a handful were chosen in the end. Every Thursday more bands will play in this collection of mini-concerts meant to get the word out about the best groups the CSRA has to offer. Each night a winner will be chosen to compete in the final night against the other winners in a battle of the bands style finale.

One of the groups performing on the second night of Band Aide 1 will be False Flag. Containing ex-members of the hard-partying Signal 18, the metal-rock band will be joined by indie locals My Instant Lunch, who sound a little like early Violent Femmes. Also, pop rockers

Eleventhour will be there delivering their positive upbeat message. Melodic, catchy, pop punk band Turf War, who has built a considerable local following, will bring their signature sound to the show, too, but indie band Great Day in the Morning are also on the bill to win.

Who will come out on top? There’s only one way to find out and that’s by attending the showcase and showing your support for the best band at Coyotes that night.

When the second group of bands to play were asked who they think will be their biggest competition, each group had a different opinion. For False Flag, they’ll be keeping their eye on My Instant Lunch, while My Instant Lunch looks forward to playing with Great Day in the Morning. In all honesty, there is so much talent, and each with their own sound, it is hard to guess who will come away with the grand prize.

As for those prizes up for grabs, including new equipment and tons of promotionalmaterial, bands like False Flag plan to “moreefficiently market ourselves to folks whootherwise may not have heard of us,”keyboardist Guapo said. Their long-term goal is to grab the attention of a record label and “get our music out to the masses where it belongs.”

As for My Instant Lunch, they are “always looking for ways to improve our show and expand,” bassist Danny Rankin admits.  Other bands have different plans for the prizes. “Does Rock Bottom have kazoos?” Miles Kilpatrick from Great Day in the Morning asks jokingly. “We’ll take 2,000.”

“The great thing about a competition like this is that it brings together fans of lots of different bands,” Rankin said about the idea behind Band Aide 1. “We’d love to see it grow into something legendary.”

Bands like Great Day in the Morning have more humble plans.

“If anything,” Kilpatrick said about the overall competition and their part in it, “it’ll start new hype for the 1956 film ‘Great Day in the Morning.’”

Band Aide 1 began Oct. 22 and continues five weeks every Thursday at Coyotes.Winners get on a compilation CD with the other winners. Video and photos will be available for viewing on metrospirit.com.

“Win or lose,” Guapo stated, “this event will be a good push for us and all of the bands in the local scene.”

A sentiment shared by all who attend Band Aide 1 at Coyotes, whether they are on the stage or in the audience.
