AUGUSTA, GA - California-based duo Ghostbird (meaning owl) releases their self-titled debut EP with seven terrific catchy songs. Trent Hancock and Mike Cooper put together a group of musicians for the studio recording of their first EP. The end result is a fun, inventive piece of musical genius.
Bringing together sensitive indie rock with a very intelligent, creative pop sound similar to such iconic figures in music as David Bowie or T. Rex, Ghostbird release an EP with ultra-smooth catchy hooks and a commercial yet not even remotely boring sound.
Right off the bat, “Toy Soldier” launches into a wonderful indie pop sound with a great lo-fi sing-along chorus, similar to bands like Peter, Bjorn, and John or the Mates of State. These guys play that infectious brand of indie rock that has dominated the underground experimental rock scene for the last few years.
As the self-titled EP by Ghostbird progresses into the moody yet inspiring ballad of “Night Kills Day,” the true genius of Hancock and Cooper erupts. The vocals are amazing and out of this world, very introspective Bowie mixed with some fuzzed out guitar and the old-school electronic emo sound circa 2000.
The album continues on with “Sing,” “Caroline,” “the Drug” “We’re OK,” and an alternate version of “Toy Soldier.” The lo-fi underground sound of Ghostbird delves deeper into fuzzy moody indie rock complete with crafty mixing and looping.
A truly amazing record, this EP by Ghostbird brings out all that is good, real, gritty, and yet infectiously clean in indie rock. Seven songs of slower, moody, electronic-influenced rock; the debut EP by Ghostbird is classic underground rock at its best.
