It is time for the third annual Metro Spirit short story contest. This year, the grand prize winner will not only receive $100 in cash, but he or she will also get a free registration to Augusta State University's Sandhills Writers Conference.

The conference will be held March 18-20 and it is a prize valued at $156, generously donated by ASU. For more information about the Sandhills Conference, please check out the following Web site: www.sandhills.aug.edu

So, send us your best work, on any subject, in 2,000 words or less. Writers can enter by sending their stories to spirit@metrospirit.com.

Last year, we received more than 100 entries and we chose our top five picks.

The deadline for submissions is Dec. 1 and we will publish the winners' stories by the end of the year.

The Spirit staff will pick the grand prize winner and he or she will receive $100.
We ask that those entering the short story contest this year be residents of the CSRA.

We have also decided that employees, freelance writers and interns at Spirit are not eligible for the contest.

Again, please send your entries via e-mail to spirit@metrospirit.com.

Good luck everyone!

Just in time for Halloween, local entrepreneur Michael Wolff is turning part of the Doris Building into a spooky venue for ghoulish family fun with the introduction of “Dessert with a Ghost,” a multi-sensory experience that serves up ghost tour fun complete with your choice of toppings.

“Basically, what I’m trying to do is educate people through entertainment,” Wolff says. “I wanted to be able to do something that was a little bit different than what you’d experience with a traditional type of tour.”

Being in the Doris Building, which is directly next door to the more famous Whites Building, “Dessert with a Ghost” is basically a three-act show starting with the storytelling portion, called “Ghosts, Legends and Graveyards,” segueing into “I Scream” sundaes served from the “Scoops and Screams” sundae bar and ending with entertainment from Jason Porporino, aka the “Card Phantom,” and mentalist Doc Thornton.

“This is going to be a year-round event,” Wolff says. “We’re going to take a short break for the holidays and resume on select weekends at the first of the year.”

“Dessert with a Ghost,” which debuts Oct. 30, will eventually share space in the Doris Building with Wolff’s larger endeavor, an ice cream shop called the Broad Street Treatery.
