AUGUSTA, GA - One of Augusta’s coolest places to spend a hot afternoon is now also one of the least expensive.

During the Augusta Museum of History’s Dollar Dog Days of Summer promotion, seeing the James Brown exhibit will cost only $1. That dollar will also allow you to see all the other exhibits in the museum, too — which may not be quite as certifiably cool, but are still completely air conditioned.

“The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown” has been a hit since it opened in May, driving attendance at the museum up about 30 percent. It’s the first major exhibition in the world celebrating this incredibly important figure in musical history.

This summer, the museum launched another significant exhibit, “From Ty to Cal: A Century of Baseball in Augusta.” Ty Cobb, one of the greatest baseball players ever to play the game, called Augusta home. Cal Ripken, the ironman infielder from Baltimore, now owns the Augusta GreenJackets and has made them a model of minor-league success.

The baseball exhibit traces the history of more than a dozen teams that have called Augusta home.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer the families and residents of the CSRA special reduced admission rates,” said Nancy Glaser, executive director of the Augusta Museum of History. “Discounted admission will ensure everyone in the community has the opportunity to visit their History Museum.”

This month, the museum will also present “Movies of Color: Black Southern Cinema” in the History Theater. The movie is a portrait of independent African-American filmmaking prior to World War II.

Dollar Dog Days also extends to the Ezekiel Harris House. Children under 5 are free.
