Less than memorable

Despite the appearance of Robert Pattinson in human form, this week’s box office openers are a letdown after the Academy Awards

AUGUSTA, GA – History was made at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony when Kathryn Bigelow earned the distinction of being the first woman to receive Best Director honors for her work on “The Hurt Locker.”

The film also scored Best Picture accolades in addition to several writing and technical awards. Sandra Bullock took home the Best Actress Oscar for her role in “The Blind Side” while Jeff Bridges also picked up his first Oscar for “Crazy Heart.”

James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster “Avatar” did not fare as well at the awards ceremony. The sci-fi adventure was nominated in nine categories and ended up taking home three technical awards.

This week’s openers are movies you’re not likely to see in any major categories on next year’s Oscar ballot. “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson caused a media frenzy recently when he revealed his fear of female parts to Details magazine and confessed to the ladies on “The View” that he finds “Golden Girl” Betty White to be one of the sexiest women in America. Whether these comments are the product of someone with a unique sense of humor or a penchant for toying with the media, they’ve gotten attention for the actor and his new film, “Remember Me.”

The story of a troubled young man dealing with family issues while falling in love with an adventurous young woman (Emilie de Ravin) is reminiscent of the James Dean classic Rebel Without a Cause.” Chris Cooper and Pierce Brosnan star as the imperfect father figures who contribute to the young couple’s emotional baggage.

“Green Zone” marks the third action collaboration between Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (“The Bourne Supremacy,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”). Loosely based on the book “Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone” by former Washington Post Baghdad bureau chief Rajiv Chandrasekaran, the film follows Damon through his Bourne-like conundrum of finding corruption in a government agency.

Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan and Brendan Gleeson also star in this military-conspiracy-theory action vehicle for Damon, in which he finds sinister, self-serving cover-ups in the war zone instead of weapons of mass destruction.

Incidentally, both Damon and Greengrass have wavered on commitment to a possible fourth Bourne flick, with the actor citing Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington or Ryan Gosling as his possible replacements in the role.

Other openers include a goofy romantic comedy, “She’s Out of My League,” featuring little-known actor Jay Baruchel (“Knocked Up”) and an ensemble comedy, “Our Family Wedding.” “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera plays a bride whose father (comedian Carlos Mencia) clashes with her groom’s dad, Forest Whitaker. That tension adds to familial stress leading up to the biracial couple’s wedding day. “Southland” actress Regina King also stars.

The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers returns to the Imperial Theatre with “The Reckoning: The Battle for the International Criminal Court” Wednesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. Focusing on a group intent on bringing war criminals and other violent, dangerous types to justice, the film explores politics attached to legal proceedings at the international level.

Tickets are $5 with discounts for students and military with I.D. Filmmakers Paco de Onis and Pamela Yates will take questions and provide additional insight into their storytelling process after the screening.
