With no coattails but his own, Bill Fennoy soundly defeated incumbent Matt Aitken to win the District 1 commission seat, bringing the 2012 election season blessedly to a close.
Fennoy didn’t have a black president or a black sheriff to motivate voters this time around. All he had was a white opponent who, for many in the predominantly black district, seemed to get whiter the longer he was in office.
In the end, that was all it took.
With Aitken’s departure goes the historic 6-4 white majority.
If any of it mattered to Aitken, it was hard to tell, which undoubtedly contributed to his poor showing.
